Cyprus denounces Turkish violations in a letter to the UN Secretary-General

A letter from the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Ambassador Andrea Mavrogiannis, to the UN Secretary General on May 28, Antonio Gon, was released on Thursday as an official document of the General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council.

In the letter, the Government of the Republic denounces the Turkish violations of the national airspace and maritime space of the Republic of Cyprus, which took place in February and March 2020. The letter is accompanied by four documents detailing the violations of the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus. of international air traffic regulations in the Flight Information Area (FIR) of Nicosia and the illegal use of closed ports and airports by Turkey. The systematic use of the illegal airport of Tympos by Turkish commercial aircraft is also pointed out.

The Cypriot Permanent Representative points out that this Turkish behavior is of particular concern to the Republic of Cyprus and is a continuing violation of its sovereignty and increases the devastating effects of the invasion and continued occupation of part of its territory by Turkey.

In addition, it emphasizes that this persistent policy of violating the UN Charter, international law and international rules and regulations is a constant threat to international peace and security, has a negative impact on regional stability, and endangers the safety of international civil aviation. creates difficulties in air traffic in Cyprus and prevents the creation of a favorable environment for the conduct of the peace process.

The Permanent Representative also points out that Turkey's aforementioned actions, which have continued in the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus since 1974, are clearly aimed at undermining Cyprus' sovereignty, reinforcing the ongoing de facto division and upgrading. an alleged airspace over the occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus. He stressed that there is a legal authority in Cyprus, the Republic of Cyprus, as confirmed in various Security Council resolutions, in particular Resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984), which annulled the Security Council's attempt to secede from the Republic of Cyprus. .

Concluding, Ambassador Andreas Mavrogiannis urged Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot community to contribute to a substantial recurrence of the peace process, instead of focusing on undermining the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and promoting the creation of Cyprus through the division of Cyprus. consolidation of the status quo, seeking, among other things, the political upgrading of the separatist entity.
