CYPRUS: 5 deaths, 402 cases and 231 positive rapid tests

The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 22, 2020:

- Five people have died from the disease COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 101.

- 130 patients COVID-19 32 of whom are in serious condition.

- A total of 12,658 disease detection tests have been performed, of which 4,088 by the molecular method (PCR) and 8,570 by the rapid antigen detection method (rapid test).

- 402 new cases of the disease were identified and confirmed by molecular tests (PCR), raising the total number of cases at 18,406. The 402 include 135 verifications from rapid tests of the previous days.

- In 231 cases from the rapid antigen test (rapid test) there was a positive result, which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).

The current results are detailed.

A. Deaths from the disease COVID-19:

The five people who died with the ultimate cause of death being attributed to the disease COVID-19, relate to:

- A 83-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Nicosia.

- A woman, aged 66, with underlying diseases, who was treated at the General Hospital of Famagusta.

- An 86-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital.

- A woman, 81 years old, with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital.

- A man, 101 years old, with underlying diseases, who lived in the Multipurpose Center of Solea.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the ultimate cause of the disease COVID-19 amounts to 101, of which:

65 men (64%), and

- 36 women (36%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 79 years.

B. Patients:

Of the 32 patients who are critical, 12 are intubated, three are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and 17 to the Intensive Care Unit.

The situation in the hospitals is as follows:

C. Molecular Test (PCR test): Of the 4,088 laboratory diagnoses performed today by the molecular method (PCR), 402 cases of the disease were identified and verified COVID-19, which emerged as follows:

  • 124 cases from 918 samples taken through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 3 cases of 815 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 111 cases from 1,770 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 26 cases from 314 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 3 cases from 74 samples received under the program of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
  • 135 cases from 140 samples taken for verification by the method of molecular examination of positive results detected by the rapid antigen test method in the previous days. The verification with the method of molecular examination is carried out by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were performed without detecting a case:

  • 57 samples taken from the inhabitants of Kato Pyrgos Tillirias.

D. Antigen rapid test: From the 8,570 tests performed with the method of rapid antigen detection (rapid test), 231 positive results were obtained.

These 231 cases will be examined by the molecular PCR method, in order to be verified.

In detail, the rapid antigen test (rapid test) was performed today as follows:
