CYPRUS: The death toll in the cities is alarming

In fourth and fifth place respectively are Cyprus and Greece, in terms of the deaths of those who use the roads in the cities, according to a report issued by the "European Transport Safety Council" (European Transport Safety Council, ETSC). ETSC is an independent non-profit organization based in Brussels, founded in 1993 and funded through a variety of sources, including subscriptions, Commission funds, and public and private sector support.

According to a report published yesterday, urban road mortality is the highest in Romania with 105 users per million urban population, four times the EU average, followed by Croatia with 88 deaths per million, Serbia 74, Cyprus 60, Greece 58 and in Poland 57.

In fact, the report notes that "progress" in reducing deaths "has stopped in the United Kingdom, Spain and Cyprus". Progress was below the EU average in Israel, Lithuania, Finland, Hungary, Germany, Ireland, France, Sweden and the Netherlands, and in any case it was slower than progress on rural roads. Road deaths on urban roads fell by 9% slower per year than on rural roads in Lithuania, 8% in Norway, 7% in Cyprus and Estonia, 5% in Spain, and 2% in Germany. , in France and Belgium.

The report records that more than 50% of all road accidents occur on the road network within urban areas in Cyprus, Romania, Croatia, Serbia and Portugal and almost 50% in Greece.

In addition, moped / motorcycle riders account for 43% of all urban road deaths in Greece, 31% in Cyprus, 29% in Italy, 28% in France, 26% in Spain and 25% in Portugal.

In particular, in the chapter of the report concerning Cyprus, the ETSC states that motorcycle drivers represent 31% of the total deaths from road accidents in the urban areas of Cyprus. "Mopeds are widely used on urban roads by young and inexperienced people who are mainly students or providers of delivery services. Most of the new moped users ride with an apprentice driver license and do not have the proper training. The use of safety helmets is not as widespread as it should be and helmets are often used and not fastened properly. In addition, there is a lack of respect for motorcyclists among other drivers. Significant speed limit violation or improper driving speed by car drivers, motorcycle riders and drivers. It is necessary to conduct a thorough study to document the real reasons for the large number of deaths of motorcyclists in Cyprus ", says George Morfis, road safety specialist.

In general for all the countries in the report, the authors state that one of the main challenges for cities is the imposition of safe speed limits, as those countries that monitor compliance with the limits, record that 35% to 75% of speeds are over 50 km per time.
