Lefteris Christoforou: "To take a day for the distribution of agricultural products from the occupied territories"

Lefteris Christoforou denounces to the EU the serious irregularities observed with the movement of Agricultural Products from the occupied areas.

MEP Lefteris Christoforou intervenes with the European Commission and raises the issue of the movement of agricultural products from the occupied areas, in accordance with the Green Line Regulation, pointing out the serious irregularities that occur, resulting in the movement of products that are dangerous to the health of consumers as well as agricultural products originating in Turkey.

Lefteris Christoforou urges the Commission to take measures and strictly apply the rules for the movement of agricultural products from the occupied territories.

In this regard, in his intervention in the European Commission, he states the following:

As is well known, with the implementation of the Green Line Regulation, since 2006, the Turkish Cypriots have the opportunity to transport from the occupied, Agricultural Products, to the Free Areas of the Republic of Cyprus.

It is also known that in the occupied territories the situation regarding the way of farming and care of the produced agricultural products is out of control.

Specifically, I point out that in the occupied territories there is an uncontrolled import of dangerous and banned pesticides which are sold and used in agricultural crops. The inability of the control services of the Republic of Cyprus to access the occupied areas calls into question the quality and safety of the agricultural products produced in the occupied areas. Essentially, however, these agricultural products of dubious quality and safety, through the Green Line Regulation, are diffused into the EU itself.

In addition, there have been repeated allegations that significant quantities of agricultural products in the occupied areas are Turkish-made products, christened Turkish Cypriot, and marketed in the EU market.

Can the Commission therefore say:

  1. What measures is it taking to address the risks posed by Turkish Cypriot products to the health of European Consumers.
  2. How he dealt with the frequent complaints of the Agricultural Organizations of the Republic of Cyprus for the unsuitability of the Turkish Cypriot products as well as for the entry of Turkish products through the occupied ones.
