PASYNO calls on the State to support the work of mental health nurses

To support the work of mental health nurses by upgrading their building workplace and their staffing, the Pancypriot Union of Nurses (PASYNO) calls on the State in its message on the occasion of today's World Mental Health Day. In Cyprus, "third-world situations" continue to operate that do not help the upgrading of Mental Health services, he says.

PASYNO declares that "now is the great opportunity but at the same time the challenge to raise public awareness of mental illnesses, but at the same time to "wake up" states and governments and proceed with serious interventions for mental health" .

As he notes, "World Mental Health Day is the trigger for everyone, governments, parliaments, agencies and organized groups, to join forces and implement programs to upgrade mental health structures, logistical means and human resources".

The guild states that today "we are experiencing great challenges as a society and as health professionals".

“The post-pandemic return to supposed normalcy and the ongoing war in Ukraine are disrupting the lives of people, families and societies. In particular, health workers and other frontline workers have received one of the biggest blows, physical and psychological fatigue, with serious effects on their mental health", emphasizes PASYNO.

However, as he states, "the biggest problems are found among the population that manifests various kinds of mental illnesses and that we are all called upon as a society and as health professionals to support".

Unfortunately, it is added, in Cyprus, "third-world situations that do not help the upgrading of Mental Health services" continue to operate. We work in a hospital, antiquated, which instead of helping patients and staff, lowers their psychological mood."

The union considers that "upgrading the building facilities of the Athalassa Hospital and the Mental Health Services is of urgent and primary importance".

"We invite everyone who is in the decision-making centers to think about mental illnesses, knowing that everyone can face a mental illness at any stage of his/her life. What is important is that they are informed in a timely and appropriate manner about the ways to deal with them and that they proceed with the appropriate interventions with the support of the experts", the guild points out.

PASYNO once again highlights the very important role played by mental health nurses for the patient's health and mental well-being and calls on the State to support their work by upgrading their building workplace and staffing.
