With the air of No. 1 of the World Ranking of Laser boats for 2021, Pavlos Kontidis fills his preparation in view of his racing obligations in 2022. After a long stay in Limassol, a few days ago he returned with his family to his base in Split, Croatia, where he will continue to train under the guidance of renowned Croatian coach Jozo Jakelic.
The last weekend of February and the first of March are scheduled in Croatia for the first two games of this year for the Cypriot Olympian, which will be of a coaching nature. The first big date of the current year is the 51st Trofeo Princesa Sofia in April in Mallorca which will be the first World Cup this year. The Hyeres World Cup follows in the same month, while the World Laser Championship will be held in Mexico in May. Autumn will be the Pan-European, also in Hyeres.
The World Sailing Championship in The Hague was originally scheduled for 2022, which was postponed to August 2023 due to coronavirus. This is the main qualifying match for the Olympic Games "Paris 2024".
"Preparations for 2022 have started in December with the camp we hosted in Limassol with the presence of top athletes. "Now we are entering the final straight in view of the games, since the Spring will be full of important racing obligations", says Kontidis. "Starting at No. 1 in the world rankings - as it was announced last month - gives me impetus but also satisfaction as 2021 was a strange year, as the very good performances were not accompanied by major medals" adds the sailor of the Nautical Club Limassol.
In addition to the important racing obligations of this year, in 2022 the preparation for the Olympic Games "Paris 2024" actually begins, with Kontidis and his coaching team planning within the summer the first contact with both the waters that will take place in World Championship (and the main Olympic qualifying race) of 2023 as well as the Olympic waters of Marseille.
