The Democratic Party will not participate in the government, said its President Marios Karoyan, after his meeting on Tuesday with the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis.

"We will continue to govern on the basis of national reconciliation and social consensus without necessarily participating in governance, without consideration, without commitments," Mr Karoyan said.

Referring to the proposal of the Democratic Party for the presidency of the Parliament, he stated that "unfortunately a unique opportunity was lost to make all the necessary excesses and to create conditions of the widest unity that would lead our place safely to the new era" and said that he would speak immediately following days more extensively when a problem he faces with his voice is rectified.

Mr. Karoyan noted that he was informed about the intentions of the President of the Republic for the formation of a Government of wide acceptance and listened with special attention to the thoughts and concerns of the President.

"We were not waiting for this moment to talk about consensus. Throughout the election campaign we had a permanent pattern: national reconciliation, consensus, unity.
