All the details for the 33 new confirmed coronavirus cases

Thirty-three people tested positive for Covid-19 A total of 1,703 laboratory diagnoses were announced by authorities on Tuesday.

Professor Leontios Kostrikis, speaking at a press conference, announced that these are 13 people who were located through tracking, one person who was repatriated yesterday, 16 people from a bakery unit and 3 people from the 20,000 diagnoses that fall within the study of professionals.

He said there was concern that asymptomatic people were circulating in the community, adding that several people who became infected did not take the basic precautions and did not realize the extent of social alienation.

Based on current data, the total number of positive cases amounted to 695 (including the ten found at the British Base).

More specifically, Professor Kostrikis said that:

  • From the diagnosis plan of 20,000 professionals, 655 laboratory diagnoses were made today and 3 cases were identified,
  • Out of a total of 849 diagnoses, 30 positive ones were identified, as follows:
    • 13 resulted from the process of tracking already confirmed cases,
    • 1 person from 147 samples taken from the repatriates of yesterday's flights. Note that the process for completing the 147 samples is ongoing, and
    • 16 people working in the bakery production unit, which were carried out on the initiative of the company's management.

He stressed that 32 samples were taken from the same unit since Saturday, of which the first 10 positives were announced yesterday and 16 today. He clarified that all 26 cases lived in the same apartment complex and the social distancing was not observed.

From the program of 20,000 laboratory diagnoses, a total of 11 laboratory tests were completed on Saturday, April 4, and until 1.276 pm today.

Based on current data, the total number of positive cases amounted to 695 (including the ten found at the British Base).

Professor Kostrikis said that based on the data we have before us in the last 24 hours, the results from the tracking are encouraging.

"On the contrary, the number of confirmed cases found among our population is a matter of great concern because it confirms our concerns that the virus exists in the community and is transmitted. According to the information before us, many have become infected because they avoided taking basic precautions and, in particular, did not realize the importance of social alienation. We have said it many times and we will repeat it once again: they transmit the virus and each of us is a potential candidate case ", the Professor stressed.

The situation in the ICU

In his own statements, Dr. Marios Loizou, Scientific Director, Nicosia Directorate of OKYPY stated that based on the data until 3 pm, 23 people are being treated at the General Hospital of Famagusta (the reference hospital), two of them are being treated at the Intensive Care Unit. Two discharges were also granted.

He added that a total of nine patients are being treated by intubation, three in the Intensive Care Unit of the Limassol General Hospital and six in the Nicosia ICU. Also, in the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Nicosia, three additional patients are being treated, who are currently out of ventilator.

Dr. Loizou said that the clinical condition of all ICU patients is currently critical but stable. Also, from the ICU of the General Hospital of Nicosia there were two discharges, one to the General Hospital of Famagusta and one who is being treated in a ward at the General Hospital of Nicosia. In addition, in all hospitals, except the reference hospital, five confirmed cases are treated in a ward.

Regarding the 20.000 samples and the percentage of asymptomatic patients, Dr. Loizou said that certainly identifying this category of patients will help significantly in identifying potential risks and possible layers of disease spread.

Explain that the asymptomatic patient is an asymptomatic patient, has no fever, no cough, no sneezing.

"So if the security rules are respected, it is very difficult for him to transmit. This is very important for the protection of the whole. We have talked again about individual responsibility. We all have to protect ourselves and those around us. This will not be guaranteed by any tests and no tests. Only the strict observance of what we say every day. To keep our distance, to wash our hands, not to touch our faces ", he stressed.

According to Dr. Loizou, “the 20-30-40 thousand tests that we can do in the next period of time will cover only a part of the population and regardless of the number of positives that will be found, again most of the population will not have been tested ”.

"Until the virus is almost gone, we must continue to do the obvious. "At this point, I would like to emphasize that small Cyprus, in terms of population, has done much more tests than most countries in the world," he said.

He also said that this pandemic may drastically change the habits of the century because the handshake as an act may need to be abolished, adding that a habit that for centuries sealed agreements, friendships of people, is today considered one of the best allies of the deadly virus.

"Maybe we should learn to live for a long time keeping our distance. But that should not stop us from sharing with those around us, our friends and those in need. We do not need to be next to Famagusta.News physically to continue to be human. We know that we have probably exceeded the top of the curve. On the other hand, we know that while the disease in the initial phase accelerates very quickly, in the phase of deceleration, it slows down slowly. "So we have time ahead of us, we need patience and to continue the effort", he stressed.
