The Minister of Agriculture asked the Minister for a support package for farmers in a teleconference

The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture requested a package of support from the Minister of Agriculture to the farmers who have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, in a teleconference held this morning, with the participation of the Speaker of Parliament.

According to a written statement by the Chairman of the Commission Andreas Kafkalias, the general finding is that the agricultural sector has also fallen into a particularly dire situation and that there is an immediate need for further support measures.

"We asked for the submission of a new package of measures to support the agricultural sector, which includes, among other things, measures that support farmers in the process of production and promotion of their products, will protect them from notoriety and will provide them with the necessary liquidity and resources. for the continuation of their agricultural activity ", says Mr. Kafkalias.

At the same time, the MPs proposed the implementation of measures to reduce operating costs, flexibility in agricultural payment programs (hectare, capital, agri-environmental measures), immediate refund of VAT to farmers, acceleration of the process of payment of compensation through the Agricultural Management Plan. "The Minister informed us that all the beneficiaries will have been paid before Easter," he said.

At the same time, a consultation was held on the bill which amends the "Law on Protection and Welfare of Animals".

According to the regulations of the Parliament, the bill will be submitted to the Plenary Session of the body next Wednesday, with a request from the Government to be voted by the procedure of urgency. Mr. Kafkaulias noted that his party will take a stand on the bill in plenary.
