More than 2.100 flights were canceled worldwide today

More than 2.100 flights were canceled again today by airlines around the world, with the Omicron variant disrupting travel during the holidays, as company employees - mostly pilots - were in quarantine.

According to the latest count of the specialized website Flightaware, today at 13:30 Greek time, these problems mainly concerned China, Indonesia and the USA (a quarter of the total).

Flightaware recorded almost 8.000 cancellations over the Christmas weekend and expects another 800 for tomorrow, Tuesday.

Pilots, flight attendants and other crew members have been quarantined over exposure to Covid, prompting companies such as Lufthansa, SAS, Delta, United Airlines and Alaska Airlines to cancel flights.

Chinese airlines were the ones with the most cancellations today: China Eastern canceled 418 flights, 20% of its flight schedule, while Air China canceled 196 flights, 17% of scheduled flights.

Europe seems relatively unaffected. Air France, in particular, has not been affected by these problems, according to a spokesman. Weather conditions and border closures are also reasons for these cancellations.
