March and memorial service of Makarios in Panagia

The traditional memorial service of Archbishop Makarios III was held today on the occasion of his name day, in the birthplace of Panagia. The events were organized again this year by the historical, cultural center of Makarios III Panagia, today is the day of its name day.

The Director of the Ministry of Transport, Stavros Michael, who represented at the events the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Giannis Karousos, led this year's course of Makarios, which took place in the birthplace of the ethnarch Makarios. An ecclesiastical memorial service was held at the Holy Monastery of Panagia Chrysorogiatissa, presided over by the Metropolitan of Paphos, George. The event ended with a trishagio on the statue of Ethnarch Makarios Makarios performed by Bishop Arsinois Pagratios.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Giannis Karousos, at the ecclesiastical memorial service of Archbishop Makarios III in Panagia, represented by the Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Stavros Michael, stated that despite the challenges we face, the Greek Cypriot side of the Republic is continuous and unwavering until the restoration of human rights and the conditions of peace and prosperity for the entire Cypriot people are achieved.

In this context, he said, the vision of Archbishop Makarios to ensure the physical and national survival of Hellenism in Cyprus is a historic debt that we are called to fulfill. The emergence of Cyprus as a modern state of peaceful coexistence, with full respect for the human rights of all Cypriots, sovereign and independent. Free from dependencies of third parties, it is the maximum honor for Archbishop Makarios, he added.

Whether one disagrees or agrees with the choices and the course that Makarios followed, said Mr. Karousos, one thing is incomprehensible that Archbishop Makarios has always been a fighter for peace in Cyprus, and for the justification of Cypriot Hellenism. It is, moreover, he said, typical of his call, to make all those necessary efforts, so that with every means at our disposal to ensure the natural and national survival of Hellenism in Cyprus. Unfortunately, for 47 years the whole people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians, and Latins have been experiencing the effects of the Turkish invasion and the continued occupation of 36% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, adding that for more than 47 years of conscious Turkish policy on demographic change.

Unfortunately, says Mr. Karousos in his speech, despite the political will and determination shown by the President of the Republic, but also his predecessors showed, with the sole purpose of achieving a functional and sustainable solution, we are still faced with the uncompromising attitude of Turkey.

An attitude, as he said, that violates every principle of European and international law and hinders the reunification of our country and the creation of conditions for progress and prosperity, in full harmonization with European principles and ideals and respect for the human rights of all lawful citizens of the country. Abandoning, he added, the basis for a solution set out in the relevant UN resolutions and proposing excessive demands, Turkey insists on its long-standing goal of creating two independent states, aiming to perpetuate the presence of occupation troops and anachronistic guarantees, but also of the Turkish Cypriot community. An intransigence, he said, reflected in Turkey's illegal actions that call into question the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus over its land and sea zones, in violation of the protection regime of the besieged city of Famagusta in violation of the Council resolutions. of the United Nations.

Besides, Costas Christodoulou, president of the historical cultural center of Makarios GD Panagia, in his speech stressed that Archbishop Makarios belongs to the category of rare world historical figures who with their work and contribution have indelibly engraved the history of their homeland.
