Caution! In effect orange warning for severe weather

The orange warning issued by the Meteorological Department on Thursday (30/12) is in force.

According to the warning, a combination of prolonged and transient heavy rains is expected to affect the area from time to time.

The total rainfall locally is likely to range between 85 and 100 millimeters per 24 hours, mainly in the western half of the island and in mountainous areas.

The warning is valid from 17:00 on Thursday until 17:00 today Friday (31/12).

Barometric low affects the area.

Today the weather will be mostly cloudy, with local rains and isolated thunderstorms. Locally, the effects may be prolonged or even intense. Snow or sleet is expected on the highest peaks of Troodos. The weather is expected to gradually improve in the afternoon. The winds will blow northeast to southeast, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and locally in the west and north to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be turbulent to rough. The temperature will rise to around 15 degrees inland, around 18 on the coast and around 6 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight the weather will gradually become mostly clear, although temporarily there will be increased clouds. The winds will blow mainly northeast to southeast, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and on the leeward coast to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will gradually become turbulent on the windward and up to turbulent on the rest of the coast. The temperature will drop to around 6 degrees inland, around 11 on the coast and around 3 degrees in the higher mountains, where frost is expected locally.

On Saturday and Sunday increased clouds are expected to give isolated rains. On Monday the weather will be mostly clear.

The temperature will rise slightly on Saturday, to remain at the same levels afterwards, which will be close to or slightly above the average climatic values.

The height of the snow in Troodos Square, at the time of issuance of the bulletin, was 19 cm.
