Fire in Pelathousa - 71-year-old handcuffed

The authorities handcuffed a 71-year-old Greek Cypriot for the large fire in Pelathousa, Paphos district that broke out on Monday afternoon (22/08).

According to information, testimony has emerged against the 71-year-old that links him to the case, while he is expected to be brought before the Paphos District Court for a detention order.

We remind you that the fire had become manageable at 19:28 on Monday afternoon and burned one and a half square kilometers of dry grasses, wild vegetation, reed beds and various trees. The main focus of the fire seems to have started from an illegal dog kennel in the area.

Due to the strong winds blowing in the area, a private house with its contents suffered extensive damage, while the strong ground and air forces operating in the area prevented the further spread of the fire.

Besides, according to a relevant press release, the Fire Service responded to the fire with twelve staffed Fire Fighting Vehicles from the Fire Stations of the Paphos district, with support from the Limassol district. Sixteen fire engines and three earth movers of the Forestry Department, three mobile firefighting units from the Game Service and two from the Civil Defence, one tracked vehicle from the District Administration, as well as members of the Police, reinforced the firefighting work. After activation of Plan IKAROS II, ten aerial vehicles were attempted.

It is noted that the house of director Panikos Chrysanthous in the village of Pelathousa was burned by the large-scale fire that started in a rural area between Pelathousa and Poli Chrysochous. He suffered minor burns in his attempt to put out the fire and was taken to the hospital. After first aid was administered, he was discharged.
