The protest in Mitsero continues for the 2nd day - "Justice is suffocating us"

Residents of the affected communities continue their protest on Wednesday, for the second day, at the site where the asphalt plant is intended to be built in Mitsero, awaiting their meeting with the President of the Republic.

The Mayor of Agrokipia, Sotiris Kyriakou, reported to KYPE that early in the morning there were about 100 people in the area. He was among the people who spent the night at the scene.

"I woke up happy, I saw 100 people in front of me," he said, adding that by 1 a.m. "it was very crowded" at the scene.

Mr Kyriakou said many people interrupted their holidays to join the protest. "There are a lot of people on holiday, and others who are working, we are happy with the people who are here," he added. He also said that "the environment is friendly" between the residents and the members of the Police who are in the area.

"It is very quiet, we are waiting for them to take us from the Presidential Office," said Mr. Kyriakou.

Answering a question as to whether they had contacted the President's office, he said that until yesterday afternoon they were communicating and that the authorities are informed and would inform the President, "to make the move at this time, of the suspension so that we are not forced to close the street".

He expressed the hope that they will have a positive response from the Presidency.

Mr. Kyriakou said that they insist on a meeting with President Nicos Anastasiades because, as he said, there was misinformation regarding this specific issue.

He also said that they don't want to go out on the streets, "creating further problems because the quarries may be underperforming now because the holidays are starting but don't forget we have 70 full developments along with two abattoirs that are feeding the market". Something like this, he said, will affect the market but also the breeders and it is for this reason that they did not mobilize on Easter, after a fervent request from the breeders.

Mr. Kyriakou said that they have properly prepared for protection from the heat and will continue their protest until final vindication. He said that the asphalt today "is the tombstone", for the area.

"We are suffocated by justice to be here. We will continue the struggle until we are vindicated, because I believe we will be vindicated," he said.

It is recalled that the Communities affected - Mitseros, Kato Moni, Agrokipia, Agios Ioannis, Aredio, Malounda, Menikou, Orunda, Agia Marina, Agios Epiphanios, Kalos Chorio and Kliros - had declared their readiness last week, to close "unannounced and indefinitely", whenever deemed necessary, the road of Agios Ioannis - Kato Monis.
