The end of the 4th of January the colored inks for tattoos

The registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of EU chemicals (REACH) has outlawed some 4.000 chemicals commonly found in colored tattoo inks, with the ban taking effect on January 4. This is because the regulator said that chemicals can cause "cancer or genetic mutations".

Some of the chemicals have already been banned from being applied to the skin, so it makes sense that these same chemicals probably should not be tattooed on the skin.

Although the chemicals were outlawed in January 2021, ink makers were given a grace period to find safer compositions for creating colored inks.

Tattoo artists are worried

This grace period ends on January 4, and many tattoo artists say progress in creating new supplies has been slow, leaving them questioning whether they should deter potential clients who want colored tattoos.

Tattoo artists in the EU have expressed concern that banning colored inks will harm their businesses without actually preventing people from coming into contact with potentially harmful chemicals.

REACH has warned that the ban, which comes into force before ink makers find safe alternatives, could lead people who want paint on their tattoos to go to "street artists" who provide their services illegally.

The regulator hopes that manufacturers will develop safer alternatives to their product range before this happens.

Scientists have not reached a consensus on the relationship between the chemicals in tattoo ink and cancer, although some of the chemicals in the inks have been shown to be carcinogenic, which means they can cause cancer.
