The Police are investigating a new case of online fraud, following a complaint from a 73-year-old in Nicosia.
According to the complaint, between the dates 24/10/2023 – 06/02/24, the 73-year-old was defrauded by unknown persons, via the Internet and after being convinced of the authenticity of cryptocurrency exchange websites, in his attempt to invest, he sent the total amount of money of approximately 480,500 euros.
Specifically, the complainant, after chatting with strangers, urged him to create an account in a cryptocurrency exchange and following their instructions, he transferred the above amount of money from his bank account, after converting it into cryptocurrencies, to an electronic wallet of a fake website, which was presented masquerading as an authentic cryptocurrency exchange website.
The Cybercrime Prosecution Division is investigating the case.
