British Dhekelia Bases: Conviction of a suspect for facilitating illegal entry into the Republic

A foreigner and in particular a Palestinian national was sentenced to six months in prison by the Court of British Bases, after being found guilty on charges that he tried twice on January 31, 2019, to facilitate the illegal entry of two men from the Pergamon crossing.

According to a written statement from the Bases, "Mohammed Aljaro, a Palestinian national living in Paphos, attempted to pass through the customs crossing point of the British Dhekelia Bases in the early hours of January 31, 2019. Customs officers stopped the Palestinian for inspection while they observed two men trying to cross the road on foot, without going through the legal process.

According to customs officials, the two men admitted that the driver of the car picked them up from the occupied areas and left them near the Pergamon crossing point. They also stated that they agreed with him, as soon as they entered the British Bases, to be arrested and then transferred to the territory of the Republic of Cyprus after the payment of the corresponding fee.

The two men together with the driver of the vehicle were arrested by the customs officers and handed over to the police of Dhekelia Bases to continue the investigations.

According to the statement, "Following the Court's ruling, Assistant Police Officers of Dhekelia Bases Andreas Pitsillidis stated that this is a significant arrest and conviction and underlined the commitment of both the police and the SBA customs authority to prevent illegal entry into B and then in the territory of the Republic.

He added that "both the British Base Police and our SBA operatives take security seriously at the Pergamon and Agios Nikolaos checkpoints and there are ongoing patrols in these areas to ensure that no illegal entry is achieved."

He described the arrest by the SBA customs office as "significant", as he explained that it "sends a very strong message to the ombudsmen" of the specific crime that no matter what time they try to commit the crime, in the end the competent services will stop them. and when arrested they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law.

Mr. Pitsillidis also stated that the two men who were arrested for illegal crossing have been subjected to all the procedures that are followed in accordance with the Police Legislation.
