Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Demands immediate restoration of illegally confiscated buildings in the Archdiocese

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requests the immediate return of the illegally confiscated buildings in the area of the Archdiocese, stating that the Department of Urban Planning and Housing proceeded to an autopsy earlier today.

In a statement, the Ministry states that the protection of the architectural heritage of the place, but also of the historical, urban fabric, is a priority for the state, which, he adds, is expressed through the relevant legislation and state policy for the preservation of cultural heritage.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, with the timeless issuance of Conservation Decrees, about 7000 buildings have been declared Preserved throughout Cyprus, in order to protect and ensure their existence for the benefit of cultural identity and preservation of historical memory for future generations.

It is for this reason, he adds, that the state, through an institutional framework, supports the owners of listed buildings by providing substantial financial and fiscal incentives for their restoration.

"Additionally, the danger of such a great historical and architectural value of a building is addressed by performing immediate rescue works by the owner after approval by the competent authority to ensure the static adequacy of the building, the avoidance of its collapse and of course the safety of or permanent residents ", he notes.

In this case, the Ministry of Interior considers that the competent authority, ie the Municipality of Nicosia, should, based on the provisions of the current legislation [article 46 (3) b of the Law on Urban Planning and Spatial Planning], request the restoration of the Preserved Buildings that have demolished, in accordance with the approved fixing plans.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the restoration is possible based on the mapping of the Preserved buildings and is an integral part of the permits that have been granted.

"The Ministry of Interior and the Conservation Branch of the Department of Urban Planning and Housing are ready to directly and actively assist the effort of the Municipality of Nicosia, to restore the historic complex of buildings, which is necessary for the restoration of the historical fabric, identity and culture. heritage not only of Nicosia but of the whole country ", the announcement concludes.
