The Forest Service (TD) vigilance system is currently collapsing due to the Abstention of Employees from overtime and special hours. Which means that the Department can not support its readiness system during non-working hours, ie after 15:00, on weekends and holidays, as reported in the issue of "Today online".
Speaking about the issue on SIGMA's show "Mesimeri kai Kati", the Vice President of the Department of Forestry, Antonis Sarris, noted that there are serious problems.
The abstention of employees from overtime and special hours, he said, came with a decision of the members of the Council, in response to the indifference of the Government to solve the serious problem of understaffing.
He noted that after many warnings and written actions, all margins were exhausted.
Mr. Sarris noted that they have been shouting since 2015 for the staffing, while he added that there is a purely communicative management of the issue.
When we threaten to go out on the street, a communication management is done, to close some holes. No one is really sitting down to deal with the issue, he said characteristically.
"The President of the Republic himself, after the Arakapas fire, asked for proposals to be submitted. "I ask what happened beyond a study," he said.
He noted that in essence what is needed is to have people outside to be able to deal properly and effectively with fires.
As for the aircraft, while the goal was to equip the Department with 8 aircraft firefighting in view of this summer, a few days before the start of the high risk season, only 4 aircraft are finally available.
According to Mr. Sarris, there are two aircraft of the Department of Forests and two more will come from Spain.
As for the rest, there seem to be some problems in the tenders that were announced, he said.
He added, however, that without ground means no fire can be extinguished at all.
He said that he is very scared for this summer, with the problems that exist.
