1886: An earthquake in Charleston, South Carolina has killed at least 100 people.

1897: Thomas Edison patents the Kinetoscope, the first camera.

1919: In Chicago, USA, the American Communist Party is founded, with the slogan "Workers of the world unite".

1922: With his announcement, Kemal calls on all those who served in the Greek army to surrender within 24 hours. Judges and officials serving in Asia Minor return to Athens.

1923:  The Italians bomb and occupy Corfu.

1931: Terrible floods hit China. About 250.000 people lose their lives.

1932: By ministerial decision, summer time is abandoned in Greece.

1933: The inauguration of the People's Hospital in Goudi is taking place, to serve mainly the needy.

1957: Malaysia gains independence from Great Britain.

1960: For the development of Greek tourism, the "Achillion" of Corfu is being turned into a casino by German businessmen.

1970: The first computer chess tournament begins in Indianapolis.

1980: The Polish "Solidarity" union is founded, which under the leadership of the electrician Lech Walesa contributed decisively to the fall of communism in the country.

1984: Farewell game of Mimi Domazos with PAO against Boca Juniors 2-3 in OAKA in front of 50.000 spectators

1986: Two planes collided in flight over California, killing a total of 82 people.

1989: In Britain, Princess Anna and Mark Phillips are divorcing after 16 years of marriage.

1990: West and East Germany sign their unification treaty.

1991: NASA scientists say a massive landslide on the planet Venus caused by an earthquake is the first evidence that it is a geologically active planet.

1993: In northwest China, 242 people have been killed in a dam collapse in the remote province of Qinghai due to heavy rainfall. At the same time, Israel is approving a draft agreement with the PLO to grant Palestinian self-government in Gaza and Jericho.

1994: The IRA declares a full unilateral ceasefire after 25 years of violence.

1995: Six people are killed when a military plane of the state company of Mali, crashes in Thermi, Thessaloniki, while trying to land at the airport "Macedonia" due to loss of fuel.

1996: In India, 355 dead and hundreds of thousands homeless are the tragic toll of the floods that hit Bihar and western Bengal.

1997:  In a tragic accident in Paris, Princess Diana is killed, along with her partner Dodi al Fayette and the driver of the fatal Mercedes, while her bodyguard is injured.

1999: The youngest grand master in chess in the world becomes the British David Howell, 8 years old, who manages to defeat the compatriot of the world champion.

2002: The first Cyprus-Greece satellite is launched.

2003: Closing ceremony of the 9th World Athletics Championships in Paris. Greece leaves with four medals: a gold with Mirela Maniani in javelin, a silver with Tasoula Kelesidou in discus and two bronze with Katerina Voggoli in discus and Periklis Iakovakis in the 400m hurdles.

2004: The first ankle transplant in Europe is successfully performed by the Italian surgeon Sandro Giannini to the realist Silvano Bordon.

2005: Panic on a bridge in Baghdad kills 1.199 people.
