Attorney General: On an open line with experts on Famagusta

In the Legal Service "we have a very good team, which deals internally with the issue of the Cyprus issue and the issue of Famagusta, and we also have a team of foreign experts of international prestige, who advise us on all these issues," said the General Prosecutor of the Republic George Savvidis, in statements after the meeting with the President and members of the Legal Committee of the Parliament. He also noted that in the last six months we have received a number of opinions from foreign legal experts.

Finally, when asked about the Famagusta issue, the Attorney General, noting that the issue is predominantly political with some legal implications, said that the Legal Service is in an open line of contact with a group of internationally renowned experts from whom it receives advice, which forward to the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"A very important task of the Legal Service is to provide legal support to the competent state services and in particular to the President of the Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on issues related to the political issue," he added.

As he said, in the Legal Service "we have a very good team, which deals internally with the issue of Cyprus and the issue of Famagusta, and we also have a team of foreign experts of international prestige, who advise us on all these issues."

"These issues are delicate, I do not consider it appropriate that I should give further directions to what in our opinion should be discussed by those responsible for making political decisions. You realize that it is mainly a pre-eminently political issue, with some legal implications which we, in consultation with our international experts, give to the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. "Tomorrow I have been invited to participate in the session of the National Council and if I am asked, I will give more explanations there", he noted.

Answering a question, Mr. Savvidis said that they have an open line with foreign experts "and depending on the developments on the ground and depending on the problems and actions that take place, we constantly ask for and receive opinions."

"In the last six months we have received a series of opinions from foreign legal experts and whenever we need anything, we are in constant communication with both the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs," he concluded.
