The Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, expresses dissatisfaction with the Land Development Plan within the British Bases that was recently announced, since, as he claims, "Deryneia is being wronged once again".
A written announcement of the Municipality states that "the remote and semi-occupied Deryneia is the only local authority that will not benefit from the Land Development Plan within the British Bases announced by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the United Kingdom".
Specifically, "out of the 4 Municipalities and 23 Communities that fall under this plan, Deryneia is the only Municipality that is wronged, since the most important for the Republic of Cyprus and sensitive area of Strovilia, due to military operations and security needs for British Bases, remains out design. This is a serious blow and a blow to the acritic Deryneia, after the unfair treatment that took place in the Local Government Reform, since its peculiarities were not taken into account, as was done with another acritic Municipality ".
According to the announcement, "the area of Strovilia Deryneia and its few inhabitants, after the events of 2000, when they were forced by the Turkish army to leave their homes, today in the years 2022 and after 8 years of consultations, can not receive the same treatment with other areas within the British Bases ".
It is also noted that "after this announcement, Strovilia Deryneia will remain stuck in development and business, while the approximately 20 inhabitants will be forced to either leave the area or sell their property, in case the Republic of Cyprus and the British leadership "Bases do not give further housing and financial incentives to property owners, to upgrade existing homes or create new housing units."
The Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, "expressed his regret and dissatisfaction for this development, both to the President of the Republic and to the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom, as well as to the Commander of the British Bases".
