The joint operations of the Police of the Republic of Cyprus and the Police of the British Bases continued today with the aim of observing the restriction of the movements of the citizens, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A press release from the British Bases states that "today officials from the Famagusta Police Department and the British Base Police, participated in a joint operation in the area of ​​Dhekelia to ensure compliance with state traffic restrictions."

It is added that "as stated by Andreas Pitsillidis, Assistant Police Director of Dhekelia today from 10 am to 12 noon, a joint operation was carried out between the Police of the Republic and the Police of the British Bases of Dhekelia, with the aim of controlling in and around areas of Xylofagos, Ormidia, Xylotympos and Dasaki Achnas for strengthening the protection measures against the coronavirus ”.

He added that "the operation carried out in the area of ​​Akrotiri on April 3, where a check was carried out on about a thousand cars, showed that the vast majority of people had responsibly complied with the law. However, there was a small number of people who chose to ignore and violate the law ", he said and noted that" any illegal route endangers lives ".

He added that "those who choose to ignore the measures should know that the Cyprus Police and the British Base Police will use every method to locate and prosecute the offenders. This will include the use of Automatic License Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems to identify vehicles that may be used in violation of applicable law.

According to Mr. Pitsillidis, “in the coming weeks, more joint operations are planned between the Republic Police and the British Bases. The message of the Chief of Police of Cyprus Michailidis and the Chief of Police of the British Bases Chris Eyre is clear, that is, we need the full cooperation of the public, which must comply with the restrictions, to limit its movements to the absolutely necessary, to stay in home safe, so that together we can overcome and defeat the coronavirus ".

Two confirmed cases in the British Bases of Dhekelia

The cooperation of the citizens for the implementation of the restrictive measures concerning the spread of the coronavirus, was requested today by an official of the British Bases of Dhekelia.

From ten o'clock this morning, a campaign of the Famagusta Police Directorate, in cooperation with the Police of the British Bases of Dhekelia, started near the Xylofagos Police Station, with the aim of controlling those moving on the streets, on the occasion of the extension of the restrictive measures until the end of April. of the coronavirus.

In his statements, Andreas Pitsillidis, Assistant Police Director of Dhekelia stated that “today the Police of the British Bases of Dhekelia, in cooperation with the Police of the Republic of Cyprus, are conducting joint operations regarding the imposition of measures against the coronavirus. These joint operations will be carried out in the areas of the Communities of Ormidia, Xylofagou, Dasaki Achnas and Xylotympos, with the aim of observing the measures to restrict the movements of the citizens ".

He added that "since ten in the morning, several cars have stopped for inspection and people generally comply with the instructions of the Police and the regulations and Decrees of the Ministry of Health and the Republic of Cyprus, which were implemented inside the British Bases. These operations will continue and what we want is for the people to move only when it is necessary and absolutely necessary, to comply with the restrictive measures and for the citizens to cooperate with the Police of the Bases and the Republic of Cyprus ".

He added that "together we can move the coronavirus. We want the cooperation of the public to be able to get out of this pandemic soon, so that people can move safely on the streets of both the Republic of Cyprus and the British bases ".

Asked whether cases of coronavirus have been detected in the British Bases of Dhekelia, Mr. Pitsillidis replied that "two cases have been identified that are the spouses of soldiers serving in Dhekelia. The two cases are limited with mild symptoms, while the limitation of 14 days of one person has already expired ".
