The increase in fines for traffic violations will include driving under the influence of alcohol, said Police Spokesman Andreas Angelidis. Mr. Angelidis also stated that "the Police will continue their efforts with preventive measures, actions and targeted campaigns, in order to deal with this serious problem", referring to cases of drunk drivers in Nicosia and Paphos, on Saturday night.
In one incident, in Nicosia, a car driver, who also caused an accident, underwent a preliminary alcohol test with an indication of 200mg instead of 22mg, one of the largest indications that have been recorded, as Mr. Angelidis said.
In connection with the incident in Paphos, where a drunk was driving dangerously at breakneck speed and the co-driver attacked police officers who stopped the vehicle for control, Andreas Angelidis said that "the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and specifically with 100mg instead of 22mg".
The 38-year-old co-driver, continued, reacted and after getting out of the car attacked the two police officers, causing abrasions and bruises on one of them, while he was later arrested.
"Certainly such incidents are problematic, which is why our members are firm in their decisions," said the Police Spokesman, underlining the fact that he was an off-duty police officer who located the vehicle and informed his colleagues.
In the context of the efforts made, the actions and the targeted controls and the campaigns all over Cyprus, the issue of alcohol is included, among other things, in the suggestions for increasing the penalties, said Mr. Angelidis.
He said that driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main causes of accidents "so until there is a change in the law, the efforts of the police are intensified at all levels, so that we can prevent any unpleasant ones".
