Government and EAC do not support consumers

It is unfair for consumers to pay for the increase in oil, the damage in Marie and the monopoly of the Cyprus Electricity Authority, said today the General Secretary of the Movement of Environmentalists Ioanna Panagiotou, adding that both the Government and the EAC act in a way that consumers…

In statements after a meeting she had with the Mayor of Deryneia Andros Karagiannis, Ms. Panagiotou said that "the Movement of Environmentalists has submitted the view that there should be a reduction in VAT on electricity, something that the Cypriot government could do but he did not do it. "The European Commission is accepting a reduction of 5% in the VAT for electricity", he said.

He added that "if we think that tomorrow we will have the increase of VAT from 15 to 17%, we realize that both the state and the Electricity Authority act in a way that does not support households. In fact, the EAC, with its own policy, does not support either the state finances or the finances of the consumers ", he noted.

Ms. Panagiotou also stated that "so far the EAC should have turned to renewable energy sources and have a more productive system of administration and management and the organization, so that the consumer does not pay all these own costs."

The Secretary General of Ecologists was invited to comment on today's protest of citizens outside the EAC offices in all cities of free Cyprus.

"We, as the Green Movement, have called on our members and friends to join and support this movement of citizens," he said, adding that "this protest expresses the reality and indignation of consumers who think it is really unfair." and it is unfair to bear the burden of the increase in electricity, because of the increase in oil, because of the losses in Marie and because of the EAC monopoly ".

He added that "things are difficult and the EAC must take very seriously what it will do from now on and must respect consumers."

Referring to the meeting she had with the Mayor of Deryneia, the Secretary General of Ecologists described it as "very constructive, we discussed mainly issues of green development and put forward our proposal for the creation of a memory park".

Ms. Panagiotou also gave "congratulations to the Mayor and the Municipal Council of Deryneia because they really have open procedures and have included citizens in the various Committees of the Municipality, strictly observing the article of the Law for equal participation of citizens".
