Netflix: No more code sharing – See what will apply now

As we have informed you, the end of sharing Netflix codes with friends is just around the corner. The company has been preparing the ground for a long time, even emphasizing a few days ago that the very big change will come in March or April 2023.

Now, the subscription service has just updated the FAQ section of its website, revealing exactly how it plans to stop the phenomenon. In particular, Netflix will require users' various devices to regularly connect to the local Wi-Fi of the paying user's home and watch something. Alternatively, access to the service will be blocked.

In particular, in order to continue viewing from a device, it will be necessary at least once every 31 days to connect to the Wi-Fi network of the account's central location. At the same time, elements such as device IDs and IP addresses will be used to determine if a device is indeed connected to the correct Wi-Fi.

The relevant section on the Netflix website states:

“To ensure uninterrupted access to Netflix, connect to your primary location's Wi-Fi, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days. This creates a trusted device so you can watch Netflix even when you're away from your main location.

If you are away from your main location for a long time, your device may be blocked from watching Netflix. You can request a temporary password to continue watching."

As you can see, there will be a small window, with the temporary confirmation codes. In practice if any device misses the 31 day confirmation window it will be locked and then required to receive a 4 digit code from the account owner.

We don't know at this time if there will be any limit on how many times an "outside" device can be unlocked in another location with these temporary codes, nor for how many days such a code will allow tracking.
