A tragic accident that claimed the lives of nine people occurred in the northwest Italy a short distance from Lake Maggiore. Three others were also injured.
Shortly before 13.00 (local time), suddenly, the steel cable car was allegedly broken and the cab fell into a vacuum. Due to the good weather conditions, there are many tourists in this area of Piedmont and this particular cable car had just started operating again. According to the Italian media, the injured, including two children, were transported by helicopter to a hospital in Turin. The Fire Brigade, the Civil Protection and the Alpine and Speleological Rescue were found on the spot. The cable car in Italy was only 100 meters from the top, which is at an altitude of 1.491 meters, when suddenly the cabin fell into a vacuum. The journey takes 20 minutes.
In 2014, the cable car was closed for general repair and maintenance and reopened on August 13, 2016. The works had cost 4 million euros. After the lockdown, due to the coronavirus, it reopens on April 24.
