Damages are being measured in Tsirio after last night's incidents

An injured police officer, damage to the stands and the tartan of the Tsireio stadium, damage to four vehicles and to properties in the surrounding area, were the result of last night's incidents in the local derby between Apollon and AEL, which never started.

In the morning, the officials of the Tsirei stadium started cleaning the area and as stated by the manager of the technical services of the stadium, Kostas Christodoulou Tsigarides, "during the warm-up of the football players, fans started throwing pieces of concrete from the stands".

As a result, the footballers were forced to return to the dressing room, while Apollon footballers were in danger of being stoned by AEL fans.

After analyzing the facts, the Police informed that, for security reasons, the match could not be held and was therefore postponed.

The diversions, Mr. Tsigaridis added, continued and fans removed chairs, which they gathered in a pile and lit a fire, threw flares and pieces of concrete, adding that the greatest damage was recorded from the eastern stand. The amount of damage has not yet been calculated and an assessment by the civil engineer is expected, he added.

He also mentioned that in the last few days there was information that some intended "instead of celebrating the last game in Tsireio", to cause damage and the Police had been informed about this, via mail.

The vandalism continued outside the stadium and according to a Police announcement, tear gas and the "Aiantas" riot vehicle were used at fans who threw stones, molotov cocktails and flares, while the Fire Service was called to the area.

During the incidents, a member of the Police was injured by a flare and was taken to the Limassol General Hospital, where it was found that he has a burn on the right side of the chest.

Four cars parked in the surrounding area of the stadium were also damaged by the throwing of Molotov cocktails, flares and stones, while three buildings were also damaged by the use of flares and three plastic rubbish bins were burnt to the ground.

It is noted that during the checks carried out when the fans entered the stadium, a 20-year-old man was arrested who was in possession of three torches.

Police investigations are continuing, while the closed surveillance circuits of the stadium and the surrounding area are being examined.
