Gang rape: Britain's first reaction - 'Torment will bring change'

At noon on Monday, the Supreme Court overturned the conviction of the 19-year-old British woman, who was sentenced at first instance for public harm, after a false complaint.

Although the British woman was not in Nicosia to watch the process, she expressed satisfaction through the mother's statement in the Guardian newspaper.

Specifically, he stated that "we are very pleased to hear that the Cypriot authorities have acknowledged the shortcomings of their judicial process. "While this decision does not justify the way in which the police, the judge or the authorities have dealt with it, it does give me hope that my daughter's martyrdom will at least bring about changes in the way victims of a crime are treated."

It is recalled that her British lawyer, Michael Pollack, had previously stated that "from a human rights perspective it is the most important case in Cyprus in the last ten years", adding that "it will determine whether basic guarantees of a fair trial, such as "The right to be represented by a lawyer and to have a fair trial are protected in Cyprus."

According to the British newspaper Telegraph, if the appeal did not lead to the reversal of the first instance decision, the young Briton's lawyers would appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

It is noted that the decision of the Supreme Court was taken by a majority.
