In addition to the 490 traffic violations by fixed and mobile cameras, the photo-marking system was detected by 11:00 on Monday, which was put into operation in the morning, Haris Evripidou, Assistant Director of the Traffic Department of the Police Headquarters, told KYPE.
Specifically, Mr. Evripidou stated that the system, which was put into operation for the first time today, detected and recorded, by 11:00, 286 traffic violations by fixed cameras and 209 traffic violations by mobile cameras.
The system will operate on a pilot basis until the end of the year, through which fixed and mobile cameras will record traffic violations and impose fines, with the aim of reducing road collisions.
It is noted that the relevant legislation was approved last Thursday by the Plenary Session of the Parliament, after the signing of the contract with the contractor of the project.
As Mr. Evripidou stated in KYPE, the contract that has been signed includes 90 fixed cameras in thirty locations throughout Cyprus, while he noted that it also includes 20 mobile cameras for the control of traffic violations, for which the Police will determine the location and operating hours in daily basis.
Answering a relevant question, he stated that the cameras will detect violations of the speed limit, the red signal and the stop line, while he added that by detecting and recording the specific offenses, in addition, offenses such as the use of a mobile phone while driving can be detected. non-use of the seat belt by drivers and non-use of a protective helmet by motorcyclists.
From the 1st of January the out-of-court settlements
According to Mr. Euripides, the sending of extrajudicial fines to the offenders will start from January 1, 2022, since as he said at this stage and until the end of the year only warnings will be issued.
He further explained that with the beginning of the new year, the offenders will receive the extrajudicial fine with a registered letter and a specific code, with which they will have access to a photo, which will depict the illegality they committed.

Asked about the penalties that will apply, the Assistant Director of the Traffic Department said that the penalties are the same as those in force until today, to note that what changes with the approval of the relevant legislation last Thursday is the change in the repayment date .
He noted that before the adoption of the relevant legislation for some offenses, the repayment of out-of-court settlements was valid for up to 15 days, while now everything has been done for up to 30 days or up to 45 days.
Where the cameras will be located
Asked about the locations where the cameras were or will be installed, he said that there are already four fixed cameras at the intersection of Griva Digeni and Demosthenes Severis, adding that in the continuation of the program they will be installed at another 29 points.
In total, he said, 90 fixed cameras will be installed in 30 locations across Cyprus.
He pointed out that the rest of the cameras will be installed in the long run, since the program is completed in 2023.
Mr. Evripidou stated that the schedule provides for the installation of cameras in 3 months from today, in 6 months and then in 18 months, while the installation will be done gradually.
