The negative developments with Famagusta should motivate us to take initiatives for the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue, said the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou.

In his statements after the meeting he had with the Minister of the Interior at AKEL's offices and asked to comment on the developments in relation to Famagusta, Mr. Stefanou said that the new processes and developments cause AKEL concerns, adding that they expect from the Government responsible information about the real dimensions of the matter.

"It is clear that the passage of time without a solution to the Cyprus problem leaves many side effects and many negative consequences on the ground and now we are seeing such a negative consequence," he said.

Mr. Stefanou mentioned that on the one hand we should see what are the real dimensions of the whole issue in order to deal with it by taking specific initiatives and actions. On the other hand, at the same time, he said, these kinds of problems and side effects should motivate us to take initiatives in the direction of breaking the prolonged deadlock with the aim of resuming the negotiations from the point where they were interrupted in order to complete the effort to resolve the Cyprus issue .

"Without a solution to the Cyprus issue that would liberate and reunify within the framework of the ILO with political equality as described by the UN, the problems are there and Turkey is taking advantage of the prolonged impasse to create such and other occupations completed on the ground", concluded Mr. Stefanou.
