In the near future, the antennas located in the area of Cape Greco will be demolished, said the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannettou.

He added that "after the closure of the radio station in the area of Cape Greco and through the contract that existed between the Republic of Cyprus for the concession of the space, it will be given back to the Forest Department where it belongs. The demolition of the antennas will take place in the near future, the company that has undertaken the demolition has prepared an environmental study and the Municipality of Ayia Napa, taking into account all the data, will proceed with the issuance of the demolition permit ".

The Municipality of Ayia Napa, continued "is in cooperation and consultation with the Department of Forests and various suggestions are evaluated for the development of the area, which is a reference point not only for Ayia Napa but for the whole of Cyprus. "Cape Greco is the easternmost point of Europe, which has unique beauties, but no one could visit or approach from land, except the sea, as long as it was possible to cross by boat."

Answering a relevant question, Mr. Zannettou said that "in the area of Cape Greco, the first sunrise in all of Europe is taking place. In the year 2000, with the change of the century, this area was flooded by thousands of tourists who had celebrated the first spectacular sunrise for the 21st century ".

To another question he answered that "the area of Cape Greco is about 385 hectares and belongs to the NATURA 2000 area. In this area is one of the four lighthouses built in Cyprus, around the 19th century that guided sailors at sea and is a point deposited "he said and noted that the other three lighthouses in the free areas of Cyprus are located in Kavo Kiti in Larnaca, in Kavo Gata in Limassol and in Paphos.

He also noted that "the radio facilities in Cape Greco hosted an American and a French radio station, high-power in the middle waves, with broadcast direction to the Middle East and used since the 70's. With the termination of their operation, the way was opened for their demolition, solving a long-standing problem faced by the inhabitants of the area, both with the visual pollution and with the consequences on the public health ".

Mr. Zannettou also said that "the electromagnetic field that existed through the antennas was so large that the decision to shut down the station and remove the antennas, is positive, both for the people of Ayia Napa and for the whole Cyprus ".
