The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Giannis Karousos, is worried about the radioactive radiation emitted by the antennas installed in Cape Greco, which, as evidenced by measurements made at the initiative of the Municipality, are at extremely dangerous levels for human health. It is worth noting that based on the measurements made, the radiation emission is up to 113 times above the medically permissible limit.

The danger of radiation was also confirmed by Andreas Neokleous, Professor of Physics at the University of Athens and Member of the International Commission for the Biological Consequences of Electromagnetic Fields, which conducted the measurements in the area.
Speaking on the Active radio station (on the show Agenda with Andri Daniel) both the Mayor of Ayia Napa and the Professor who conducted the measurements on behalf of the Municipality, demanded the immediate removal of the antennas from the area, warning of the deadly danger, which is exposed those near the antennas.
It is noted that in the area of Cape Greco, a short distance from the antennas, there is a camp of the National Guard, with all that this implies for the health of the soldiers.
This cologne lasts… years
The issue of antennas dates back to the 60s, but only recently have measurements been made to confirm the initial suspicion that they were dangerous.
Mr. Karousos stated that the measurements were carried out on the initiative of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, as it was a constant request of several environmental organizations. Therefore, the Municipality of Agia contacted experts and instructed them to conduct measurements, which showed these worrying data.
As the Mayor of Ayia Napa explained, the results showed not only ionizing radiation, but also non-ionizing at other frequencies that reaches up to 1930 times above the permissible limit for human health depending on the distance from the antennas.
Soldiers and thousands of tourists are at risk
Cape Greco is located in a national forest park, belongs to the Natura 2000 area and consequently to an area of high environmental protection. The area may not be habitable, but it is a reference point and daily attraction for thousands of tourists visiting the area, due to the unique view it offers.
It is also noted that in the area there is an Environmental Center of the Department of Forests, as well as a camp of the National Guard with all that implies for the health of the national guards who are obliged to be in the area.
Warns with legal proceedings and mobilizations
"The antennas have no place in the area," said the mayor of Ayia Napa, highlighting in addition to the medical and environmental aspects of the problem.
The Municipality of Ayia Napa has already contacted the relevant ministries (Environment, Health, Transport and Defense), asking in the first stage to take measures to shut down the antennas and in the later stage to launch their movement.
"It is time to make final decisions on the issue of antennas", stressed Mr. Karousos, who warns with legal procedures and mobilizations in case there is no positive response for moving the antennas.
It is worth noting that for the installation of antennas in the area was not requested and not given permission by the Municipality of Ayia Napa.
Dangerous radioactivity that causes cancer
For his part, Professor Andreas Neokleous, whose team conducted the measurements on behalf of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, confirmed the dangerousness of the results. "This is radioactivity, which is considered very dangerous and affects the cells, causing cancer," explained the Professor, emphasizing that the danger of ionizing radiation is not in question.
Referring to the recommendations contained in his report, Mr. Neokleous said that the movement of antennas is one way. "Radioactive radiation is not cut off by anything," Mr Neokleous said, wondering what other measures could be taken besides moving the antennas.
"The best that can be done is a complete movement of the antennas", concluded Mr. Neokleous, reiterating that one should not stay near these antennas for a long time.
