Greeting of the Secretary of the Council of Ministers Mr. Theodosius A. Tsiolas, at the opening of the Marine Collection Exhibition of Renos Klokkaris

We are together in this very remarkable place, in order to enjoy together the inauguration and the exhibits of the marine collection of the late journalist and nature lover Renos Klokkaris.

We are grateful for this to his children, Aris Klokkari, Hermes Klokkari and Lida Klokkari Kourmouli, who offered this large collection to the Municipality of Ayia Napa to decorate, on the one hand, the Municipal Museum "Thalassa" and on the other, to be able to local and foreign visitors to get to know and admire the natural treasures of our place.

Renos Klokkaris was born in Nicosia in 1915 and served journalism in difficult times for the country. He has been described as a man of letters, history and mythology but also as a lover of the nature of the plains, the mountains and the sea. He explored the seabed of Cyprus from end to end, as well as incredible seas in the Arabian Gulf, having as a diligent swimmer, his only outfit is his mask and his flippers.

The incomparable beauty of the seabed really enchanted him and he gradually created a collection of shells, which he studied through various specialized books, locating their names and analyzing their characteristics.

Renos Klokkaris worked in various newspapers and magazines and his articles were always distinguished by his pure love for Cyprus and its people. As for our history and nature.

I am quoting the following that he wrote:

"I am Renos Klokkaris, son of Antonis and Phoebe, son-in-law of Trypiotis Mahallas. I have not and have never sought positions, titles, fame and wealth (….) But what one could attribute to me is that I got into a lot, but a lot, with newspapers, magazines and the book in general and that I loved it very much, but very much, our Cyprus, the simple, pure people of our countryside, the plains, the mountains της its seas ".

The sea and the sunlight, together with our deep tradition and values that are passed down from generation to generation, are the most important and beautiful thing that characterizes our homeland and is our most important and stable investment for the future.

Ayia Napa knows this very well. The beauty of nature, the embrace of the sea, its cool and enchanting beaches gave it and its people the opportunity to take advantage of the opportunities and make the area the most popular and cosmopolitan tourist destination of our island, with all, at least, the challenges it always has to face to secure its course.

The tens of thousands of tourists who visit and live in the area every year, literally become lovers of the sea and nature in general and, at the same time, the best to advertise and promote it abroad.

This Ayia Napa, so connected to its nature, could not miss this Museum where the marine collection of Renos Klokkaris will be exhibited from now on. A museum, in fact, with the most characteristic name, that of the Sea, which is the life of the region and of our entire homeland, with the ever-increasing tourism and the large investments in infrastructure and development projects.

In a place, like the Municipal Museum "Thalassa" of Ayia Napa, where the element of the sea is elaborately integrated, the Exhibition of the Marine Collection of Renos Klokkaris will be included from now on.

And today is another opportunity to congratulate and express our gratitude to the creators of this exceptional museum space, which highlights our maritime heritage and its history from paleontology to the present day.

This year completes thirteen years of operation and offer of the Museum "Thalassa" which started in 2005 under the direction of the Pieridis Foundation, in collaboration with the Hellenic Institute for the Protection of Maritime Tradition and the Tornaritis-Pieridis Marine Life Foundation. We thank and congratulate all its creators and those who worked and are working to achieve its goals, especially the mayors and the current Mayor and those others who support in every way and participate in the vision of the operation and offer of the Museum, so honorable for our place.

Particularly warm are, of course, our thanks to the children of Renos Klokkaris who with great courtesy offered their father's collection to the Municipality of Ayia Napa. It is an energy that fully reflects what he particularly loved, apart from his family: our place and nature, our people and our sea.

Good Luck.
