Four complaints concerning incidents of domestic violence were made to the Special Tribunal for the Investigation of Cases of Domestic Violence, which started operating in ADE Famagusta on February 15th.

As the spokesman of the Famagusta Police Directorate, Andreas Konstantinou, stated in KYPE, "since February 15, when the Special Squad for the investigation of cases related to domestic violence crimes began to operate in the free province of Famagusta, a total of four complaints were made. "The allegations were made by women against their husbands or ex-husbands and relate to mild physical and psychological violence."

He added that "domestic violence and violence against women and vulnerable groups are among the highest priorities of the Police, which reiterates its will and determination to contribute to the elimination of this unacceptable phenomenon in the context of its own role and mission." The Ladder that operates in ADE Famagusta, consists of seven members of the Police and is under the supervision of the head of TAE ".

Answering a relevant question, Mr. Konstantinou said that "the members of the Police who staff the Klimakio, have been selected based on specific criteria, which are related to the training and experience they gained in investigating and handling such cases in the past. Also, with the establishment of the Ladder, the members of the Police have received additional and specialized training in order to fully fulfill their duties ".

To another question he answered that "in the province of Famagusta in 2019 there were 174 complaints of domestic violence while in 2020 there were 199 complaints, a number that is a significant increase in such offenses. At the same time, there was a small number of serious cases involving domestic violence and they were investigated with all seriousness, "he said, noting that" we are in contact with the Police Headquarters and the Legal Service of the Republic for the most correct and effective way of handling such cases. " .

Mr. Konstantinou reiterated that "it is important for people to understand that such crimes are reprehensible. The public must come close to the Police and in cooperation with the Special Ladder, to be able to achieve the fastest possible solution of the problem ".
