The winners and losers of the European elections in Famagusta

Vertical increase of ELAM percentages - Reflection and pyrrhic victory in DISY

The abstention was for another year the big winner of the European elections in the province of Famagusta. It reached 63,37% while in the last European elections of 2014 it was higher by 2 percentage points.

17.291 voters went to the polls.

Nevertheless, major changes were recorded in the party map of the province.

Despite the fact that in the province of Famagusta, the first party emerged Democratical Alarm with 36%, however, recorded losses of 11% compared to the previous European elections and a decrease of 2% compared to the Parliamentary Elections of 2016. The ruling party managed to maintain its votes in Αγία Νάπα (390 in 2014 and 391 in 2019), while in Sotira had an increase (from 683 in 2014 to 818 in 2019).

On the other hand, the second party, the AKEL managed to increase its percentages by one percentage point.

The DIKO showed a fall of 2,7%, while on the other hand the Democratic Party seems to have received the same, approximately, percentage, 2,04%.

The big winner of the elections in the province of Famagusta was COME M, which emerged as the third party with a percentage of 15,24%, while in the European elections of 2014 its percentage was limited to 2,69%. Taking into account the 3,6% received in the 2016 Parliamentary elections and the 5,65% received by Mr. Christou in the first round of the 2018 Presidential Elections, a vertical rise of ELAM is evident.

In fact, ELAM collected the most percentages in Liopetri and Paralimni where a second party emerged. In Liopetri he managed to collect 24,78% while in Paralimni 24,615.

As for them Turkish Cypriots voters in the province of Famagusta at the Special Polling Stations set up in Deryneia and Acheritou, near the two roadblocks of Deryneia and Strovilia, a total of 1.151 voters voted. AKEL emerged as the first party with more than half of the votes, 864 to be exact, Jasmine came second with 202, while DISY received a total of 16 votes, DIKO 3, the Democratic Party 3, EDEK 12 and ELAM 4.
