EDON condemns

An announcement related to the issue was issued yesterday by EDON Famagusta, which condemns the events.

This announcement:

As EDON Famagusta we condemn the energy of students today (14/10/2020), at the Lyceum of Paralimni who, in school time, in fact, proceeded to hang union flags and shout nationalist slogans. 46 whole years later, and still emerging in our society, let alone in schools and the younger generation, the most rotten ideas that humanity gave birth to, which turned out to be destructive for our people and our place.

A few days after the illegal opening of the coastal front of the enclosed city of Famagusta and while the Cyprus issue has been at a standstill for three years, these behaviors are coming and throwing water on the mill of division. The rise of nationalism has always been the weapon of the imperialists and their allies here, to achieve the goal of division.

Our Cyprus hides the dead in its bowels, the result of conflicts between two blind nationalisms. We will not allow all those who try at every opportunity to graft the minds of young people with nationalism, to continue undisturbed. We will not allow the crimes that have hurt our country to be repeated, the wounds of which are still open.

For years now, we have been complaining that the way we teach in schools does not cultivate critical thinking, it does not shape progressively thinking young people. It makes people and events heroes, who played a decisive role in achieving the NATO plan to the detriment of our country. To date, the curriculum nowhere mentions who the Turkish Cypriot community really is, and devotes very few lines to the people who sacrificed themselves in the struggle for the rapprochement of the two communities. As few mention the resistance heroes, who resisted the American-led coup of the Athens junta and EOKA II. There are many examples that prove that the current Government, not only does not try to deal with the phenomenon of nationalism, but with its political decisions in many cases has perpetuated and strengthened it.

As EDONites, we will fight with all our might to send these rotten ideas and those who represent them to the dustbin of history. We will continue to fight for the liberation and reunification of our homeland. For a Cyprus, homeland of all its children.

We call on the school administrations and the Ministry of Education to take us into account this time and take the necessary steps to avoid similar unacceptable incidents in the future. "
