A total of 64 illegal immigrants have just arrived in the Republic of Cyprus in the last twenty-four hours, causing concern to the authorities.

HYPES: "Worryingly increasing flow of migrants, meeting for action review"

An alarming rising trend in the flow of illegal immigrants to Cyprus has been recorded, Interior Minister Konstantinos Petridis told KYPE, adding that a meeting would be convened in the coming days with the participation of the Ministries of Interior, Justice, Foreign Affairs and Labor to examine the situation.

"Indeed, there is a worrying trend of increasing irregular migration flows in Cyprus either by sea or through the occupied territories," Petridis told KYPE on the occasion of recent migrant flows, warning that Cyprus has reached its limits regarding number of immigrants it can absorb.

"Cyprus, as an EU member state, respects its obligations, but on the other hand it has reached its limits on the number it can absorb," he added.

Describing immigration as a difficult issue at European level, Mr. Petridis said that a meeting will be held in the coming days with the participation of the Ministries of Interior, Justice, Foreign Affairs and Labor for an overall assessment of the situation and consideration of the measures that can be taken. .

The EU must find a holistic solution to the problem, Mr Petridis concluded.

With Dublin II virtually suspended, the proposal of the Bulgarian EU presidency, which provided for the implementation of a mandatory mechanism for the redistribution of migrants based on a formula determined on the basis of population and size, which was considered ancillary to Cyprus, met with strong reactions. There has been a steady influx of migrants in recent months, with arrivals in the free zones exceeding 80 in the last month. 117 immigrants in the last ten days

It is worth noting that in the last ten days, 117 informal immigrants, including 25 minors, have entered and are staying in the Republic of Cyprus.

According to data, there are currently about 10.000 migrants in Cyprus with protection status, while another 4.000 applications are pending for examination, with most of the migrants coming from Syria.
