The Islamic State jihadist group has used chemical weapons in an offensive against Iraqi forces fighting to retake the city of Mosul (northern Iraq), leaving wounded among soldiers, the army said today.

"The Daesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) terrorists tried to prevent the advance of our forces using shells containing toxic chemicals, but the effects were limited," said a statement from the Joint Operations Command, which coordinates the forces.

According to AFP, the incident took place on Saturday, according to the army. No deaths were reported, only some "minor injuries" to soldiers. The military did not specify where the Islamic State used the chemicals.
