Hagia Sophia does not change its name: Turks hope to "break" the curse of Muhammad the Conqueror

At the same time, he confirmed that they are working on a formula for covering the hagiographies at the time of prayer.

For the visiting tourists, he stated that arrangements will be made so that they cannot go to the part of the monument where the Muslim prayer will take place.

In an interview with Channel A Hamber, Chief Ali Erbas said he would not change the name of Hagia Sophia because from 1453 onwards it was called the "Great Mosque of Hagia Sophia".

"There is no change on this issue at the moment," he said.

Asked about the hagiographies in Hagia Sophia, Ali Erbas said, according to KYPE: "Inshallah, from July 24 and after the Muslim prayer begins, these images will be closed either with a curtain or with the help of technology, using light. After the prayer, the curtain will open again or the eclipse will stop in order to make visits. We hope to solve it with a nice system ", he said.

Ali Erbas also said that there will be no special invitations for the prayer of July 24 and that everyone is invited, while he pointed out that social distances and the use of a mask inside the monument will be observed. He added that work on the measures to be taken will start tomorrow.

He also announced that two imams and four muezzins will be appointed to perform religious duties, saying that they will choose the good voice as their main criterion.

Regarding the tourist visits, Ali Erbas said that arrangements will be made so that tourists can visit the monument without going to the places of prayer or in front of those who pray. "I don't think there will be any problem with that," he said.

Asked if the important sections of Hagia Sophia would be fully open for visits, Ali Erbas said that this would be clarified by the Ministry of Culture together with the General Directorate of Waqf and the Directorate of Religious Affairs, while he said that it could be comfortably used as a mosque. .

In fact, he said that some symbols that should not be there because they will not be in line with the function of Hagia Sophia as a mosque will be transferred and exhibited elsewhere.

He also claimed that the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque would put an end to the curse of Muhammad the Conqueror, according to which the curse of Allah and the angels would fall on those who use Hagia Sophia beyond the purpose for which he he ordered it.

"May this decision be an occasion to stop this curse on this nation," Ali Erbas said, adding that they grew up constantly hearing that while the Hagia Sophia is closed (for Muslim prayer) the Conqueror's curse is on nation".
