Regulations are set by the Norwegian Ministry of Children and Family Affairs, which obliges influencers and advertisers to let their public know if the photo they uploaded to social media has filters.

In any other case, it is considered illegal. The law, passed by an overwhelming majority earlier this month - by a vote of 72 to 15 - requires images in which a person's body size, shape or skin has changed before or after the photo was taken. , to bear a label designed by the ministry.

Examples of changes after photo editing are waist size, enlarged lips and distorted muscles.

The law will only affect ads or images used for advertising purposes. However, they include photos posted by influencers and celebrities - on social media such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter - if they "receive any payment or other benefits" from the posts.

The impact of technology, such as filters and photo editing applications, on beauty standards has long been a topic of discussion.

"Oppression of the body"

Getty Images banned photos of retouched models from the image database. France also passed legislation in 2017, requiring fashion magazines to state that photos have been edited.

In Norway, the situation is no different, with the discussion focusing on a phrase that translates as "oppression of the body". "The oppression of the body exists in the workplace, in the public space, at home and in various media," the Ministry of Children and Family Affairs said in a statement. "The oppression of the body is always there, often imperceptibly and it is difficult to fight," he said.

The ministry clarifies that with the new regulations it wants to contribute in a constructive way to the reduction of the negative impact that such advertisements have, especially on children and young people.
