The world of cinema has been plunged into mourning since the death of Robbie Coltrane. The actor who became world famous for his role as the "giant Rubeus Hagrid" in the "Harry Potter" film series, has breathed his last at the age of 72.
The sad news of his death was announced by his manager, who said in a statement that Coltrane "passed" last Friday. He added: "Robbie will be best remembered for decades to come as Hagrid, a role that brought joy to children and adults alike, prompting a flood of fan letters every week for more than 20 years. Please respect his family's privacy at this difficult time."
It has been known for years that the Scottish actor was facing serious health problems with his knees, as he suffered from osteoarthritis.
In 2018, he was caught on camera in a wheelchair at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in central London.
“He can no longer walk on his own and constantly needs help. He hopes to walk again after the surgery he will do in America", a source from his family environment had revealed to the Daily Mail at the time.
Robbie Coltrane was born Anthony Robert Macmillan. He got his stage name as a tribute to jazz legend John Coltrane. In his career he participated in several films and series and was awarded 3 times with Bafta awards.
