The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) official is expected to testify today regarding allegations of child abuse at the Purnara Temporary Hosting Center in Kokkinotrimithia.
In statements after his visit to ADE Famagusta in the context of his imminent departure from the Police, the Chief of Police Kypros Michailidis, answering a question, said that "this case is considered serious due to the form and the complaints that have been made. From the first moment, we have given instructions to investigate the case on our own initiative, the investigation has already begun, a specific official has been called to give the ones he mentioned in his own positions, but so far he has not arrived. However, the official expressed his intention to come to testify within the day, so we will immediately proceed with the investigation of this serious case and see which offenses were committed. "
Asked whether the police would make arrests in the case, Mr. Michailidis said that "this will depend on the testimony given by the official."
Regarding his visit to the Famagusta Police Department, the Chief of Police said that "it is one last meeting before I leave the ranks of the Police. It was a moving meeting since several of the executives of the Directorate are known since they were students at the Police Academy where I was a trainer, we have remembered old cases that we investigated together ".
He added that he gave his last wishes and thanks to the executives of ADE Famagusta and the Director and "some last advice to remain committed to the mission of the Police, for close cooperation with the new leadership of the Force and away from any complications and corruption cases. The society expects a lot from the Police, so we must always be at the height of the circumstances so that we can face these difficult situations that our country is experiencing, especially lately ", he noted.
He added that "I am proud to have served from the post of Chief, but also from the rest of the posts I have held during the 43 years I have been with the Police."
Mr. Michailidis wished both the new Chief of Police and the new Deputy Chief "every success. I consider that they are two excellent colleagues who have excelled throughout their service in the Police, experts in the field, lawyers, trained and with such education that I take it for granted that they will succeed in their mission, "he said.
He stated that "the Police has many problems and many shortcomings and it is definitely necessary to strengthen the Force in live material, to acquire all the infrastructure that the Police needs so that the police officer can work in such a working environment that helps in the execution of the project. and its mission in the best possible way. "
He added that "ADE Famagusta has been relocated to new buildings and such buildings are needed for the rest of the Police Directorates and a huge effort is being made by the government to enable other ADEs to acquire new housing."
Asked what the next day will be like for Cyprus, Michailidis said that he will have "rest", since especially recently the conditions have been very difficult and we are tired. But I think we have succeeded and we are at a satisfactory level, but we need rest and we all need to think about the next steps as a family. "
At the same time, he said: "I have done absolutely nothing to think about a political career or anything else. I also listen to the various scenarios and I smile because the last one who has the floor is the underdog, so the decisions will be made in due course ".
Asked if he would be interested in a political career, he replied that he was interested in the course of the country because a government official would be paradoxical if he was not interested in the public. "That alone and there is nothing else at the moment," he said.
