President Anastasiadis sent a message of unity on the internal front, to jointly address the intransigence of Ankara and end those who have accumulated the Turkish invasion in their homeland.
In a commemorative speech for the five heroes of the community of Pachna, the President of the Republic stressed that there is no luxury of choosing a policy that could lead to worse impasses.
He said that, being fully aware of what he was saying, he was also sending a message to every direction abroad, that there are limits to the dignity of the Cypriot people, as well as limits to the compromise sought.
We are fighting, he added, for a solution that will create those prospects that will allow every citizen to live in conditions of security, prosperity, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect with all the legal residents of this country.
Commenting again on Akinci's statements about the need to change the mentality of Greek Cypriots, President Anastasiadis wondered which mentality should be changed. To forget, he wondered, the occupied land, human rights, everything that is provided for all European citizens, or to forget the presence of the occupying army, or to delete the presence of Turkey with guarantee and invasive rights.
He stressed that the Greek Cypriot side is seeking peace and that this has been demonstrated in practice in the last round of talks in Switzerland, when it boldly presented proposals, as long as the anachronistic guarantees, the invasive rights and the presence of the occupying army were terminated. We do not accept, he added, any solution that would lead to the collapse of the agreement the next day.
He assured that he does not ignore the worries, concerns and expectations of the Greek Cypriots, without this meaning that the reasonable concerns of the Turkish Cypriots are ignored.
The President of the Republic said that the goal of the multilevel foreign policy is to challenge the international community and mobilize in order to exert influence in Turkey, which will send a strong message that a solution requires mutual respect.
He reiterated that the solution must ensure a normal state, which is fully in line with European principles and values, the acquis communautaire and which creates the prospects for the coexistence of the new generations of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
