The President of the Republic issued a written statement at noon on Friday, regarding what was recorded in the Democratic Alert, in the wake of the electoral result of the First Round of the Presidential elections and by extension the decision of the political office of the party.

Among other things, the President says that "the founder and historical leader Glaukos Cleridis, never deviated and never allowed, either publicly or in the collective bodies of the party, unacceptable insinuations to be attributed to the detriment of ordinary members and much more of the party's historical executives", while at the same time he does reason for "an orchestrated attempt to discredit some of the great achievements of the ten-year government and in particular the attempt without moral barriers to tarnish his name".

His statement is as follows:

It is with deep sadness that I am obliged to intervene in what has been recorded in recent days, as a result of the electoral failure during the first round of the elections.

An intervention aimed at sober reflection on where our historical faction is headed.

During the long presence of the Democratic Alarm, we experienced important electoral successes but also painful defeats.

The founder and historical leader, Glaukos Cleridis, never deviated and never allowed, either in public or in the collective bodies of the party, unacceptable insinuations to be attributed to the detriment of ordinary members and much more historical executives of the party.

A leadership attitude that allowed us to calmly manage each result by recognizing the real causes of failure and united to move forward even stronger.

Opposing the orchestrated attempt by some to discredit the great achievements of the ten-year government and in particular the attempt without moral barriers to tarnish my name and always with the aim of preserving the unity of our historical faction as well as the well-intentioned interest of our Cyprus, I appeal to everyone to immediately end the confrontations between executives so that the members and friends of the Democratic Alarm are consciously left to decide freely.

I consciously choose not to express my own position for or against the two candidates, but what I am not allowed to ignore is the Politburo's decision which, among other things, sets as the desired goals of a creative opposition:

(a) the reunification of our homeland through a clear European and Western orientation and the non-disruption of the strong strategic alliances we have achieved with countries in the region and the USA.

(b) maintaining fiscal discipline and stability, in order to avoid phenomena that led us to bankruptcy.

(c) effective immigration management.

In conclusion, I want to repeat that the unity, cohesion and reliability of the faction is the highest duty of all of us in order for our country to remain on a course of stability, development and perspective.
