The 14th Sports and Volunteer Awards of the Municipality of Sotiras took place last Wednesday, March 5 at the Municipal Theater of Sotira.
During the awards were honored citizens of Sotira who won in 2017 significant sports distinction as well as people who noted significant voluntary and charitable action in Sotira.
During the event, Deputy Mayor Sotiras Antonis Koumi addressed a greeting, on behalf of Mayor Sotiras in his absence abroad, the Commissioner for Volunteering and Non-Governmental Organizations Giannis Giannakis and the Despo Oikonomou-Sepou Representative of the Deputy Foreign Minister
In his greeting, the Commissioner for Volunteering and Non-Governmental Organizations, Giannis Giannakis, stressed that volunteering does not solve the complex problems of modern societies, but is a lever of pressure on state governments to change policies on vital issues.
Mr. Giannakis also mentioned that sports can be characterized as a system of principles and values that is often based on volunteers or has a voluntary action.
In both cases, he added, there are common values and visions, including the activation of mainly young people in sports and volunteering and the introduction of sports and volunteering as part of everyday life and as a way of life.
The awards were held under the auspices of the Cyprus Sports Organization and the Commissioner for Volunteering and Non-Governmental Organizations, while sponsors were OPAP Cyprus and the Cooperative Bank of Cyprus.
An artistic program was presented by Athena Lianou and Giannis Laoutaris.
The event was presented by the journalist, Anna Eleftheriou.
