Today marks 13 years since the Helios Airways tragedy

It has been 13 years since the fatal flight 522 (HCY 522) of the Cypriot company "Helios Airways", spread death, anger and grief throughout the island.

August 14, 2005…

The Boeing 737-31 with 121 passengers, took off at 9:07 in the morning from Larnaca airport and was operating one of its classic routes: Larnaca-Prague with a stopover at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in Athens, it never reached its destination…

The smiles of our 121 fellow human beings were erased forever. The atmosphere in our country is suffocating. "Or at 11:50 the left engine stopped running, while at 12:00 the right engine stopped. After 5 minutes, the plane crashed 2,5 km outside Grammatiko. A large fire breaks out, burning the surrounding forest area. At 12:51 the first ambulances arrived at the scene of the accident, and a little later fire trucks. "When the fire was brought under control, the collection of the dead began," the newspapers in Cyprus and Greece wrote.

The tragic list of the 121 dead in the accident was published several hours later. Cyprus is experiencing moments of ancient tragedy and the lives of many of our compatriots have changed completely.

13 years later…

The pain remains the same. As if not a day had passed. A "why" will always burn the soul of relatives. Only God and themselves know what they went through, how much they suffered.
Every night their hearts burst into tears… How much they miss those family nights full of laughter and joy. Oh my god!!! How much they miss…

Among the 121 undefeated souls, was Efstathia Mousa from Athens. She was in Cyprus on vacation with her fiancé and on August 14 with the fatal flight, she would return home.

The brother of the unfortunate girl, Loukas Mousas, reports to ant1ıwo:

"My sister was very excited to come to Cyprus for a vacation. She came with her fiancé and she was so happy when she said goodbye μας
We learned the news from the first moment from the media that Sunday morning. I remember waking up to the voices of my mother, who was the first to hear the bad news. My father was at the store, a gas station where we worked as a family. We lived through tragic moments, as of course all the families of the 120 victims.
My sister Efi (Efstathia in her normal name) was born in Athens, grew up in Orchomenos, Boeotia and studied at the Athens School of Philosophy.

Her fiancé was called Giannis and in recent years they lived in Chalkida.
I will never forget that last smile of hers… Although it was not their first trip abroad, as they had traveled to other places before, she was very excited.
They did not manage to make their dreams come true. My soul burns that their goals and dreams for the future have been lost… and in their place the void. My God !!! Why? Why; The wounds are still burning, nothing has changed, we are in pain like the first day.

The father of the caretaker Andreas Prodromou, the man who managed to take control of the aircraft for 10-12 minutes after the two pilots fainted until the fuel ran out and the engines went out, Mr. Dinos Prodromou reports to ant1ıwo:
"It may have been 13 years but nothing has changed, the same pain. After all, how can a parent who lost his child ever forget? He always hurts, he always suffers, until the end of his life. But I will always feel the same anger, the same rage for the timeless negligence, the accumulated mistakes and the unforgivable omissions that so tragically led to the death of so many souls.
Almost every day everything that happened comes to my mind but every time I try, in order not to go crazy, to find something else to occupy my mind and the first thing I do is call my children. I talk to them and I forget, at least for a while.

A fellow Andreas student sent me a letter when he saw the documentary. A very moving letter that keeps me company in the evenings along with the photo of my son.
The strange thing is that I always have the same dream…
He talks to me but he is dead. He always tells me something and then he gets lost. "I go to the cemetery almost every day, to the grave of my son and Harris and every time I make the same wish, that no one ever experiences that we, no one!"

"I remembered you again tonight…
Tonight the tears burn like fire.
Tonight is where I hurt the most.
Come tonight I am waiting for you.
Talk to me. Just talk to me.
I need it, talk to me.
I look around, silence everywhere. I look at nothing around me.
Where is the joy of the world? The sunrise?
Where are the one hundred and twenty-one angels?
Where are our children? Where did all this disappear at once?
Talk to me and tell me who took you away from us?
How did the murder take place?
I remembered you again tonight
Tonight for you my tears, tonight for you my pain
Tonight and every night in my dreams I am looking for you
I promise you that we will keep your memory alive forever !!! "
