Thousands of Tel Aviv residents built a 36-meter-high tower of Lego plastic bricks in an effort to honor an 8-year-old boy suffering from cancer and at the same time break the Guinness record.

The colorful "Omer Tower" consists of more than 500.000 bricks donated by the city's residents in the last year. It was completed today, with the help of cranes, in Rabin Square, where it was built 15 days ago.

The tower was named after Omer Shayag, the 8-year-old Lego fan who died in 2014. "It was an idea of Omer's former kindergarten teacher. The bricks were donated by the residents, companies and some of them we bought with the resources of the municipality "said a representative of the mayor.

The previous record for the tallest plastic brick tower was held by Milan in 2015, with a construction height of 35,05 meters.
