Aretha Franklin passed away at the age of 76, after a long battle with cancer.

The "queen of soul music" died at her home in Detroit, with her family and relatives by her side, as announced by her manager.

She was famous for her soul recordings, but has also sung jazz, rock, blues, pop, gospel, and even opera. She was widely recognized for her passionate interpretive style, and her vocal abilities.

Franklin was the second most awarded woman in the history of the Grammy Awards. He had won 20 awards, including the Living Legend award and the Total Offer award. Between 1968 and 1975 she won six consecutive awards, while for this period, the category "Best Female R&B Vocal Interpretation" was nicknamed "The Aretha Award".

Franklin had a total of twenty "number 1" singles on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart. Two of them, "Respect" in the 1960s and her duet with George Michael in the 1980s, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" topped the Billboard Hot 100.
