Salt is one of the essential ingredients in food to enhance its taste. However, excessive consumption poses health risks.

Increased salt intake contributes to the development of hypertension in people with a relative predisposition. People with high blood pressure have a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease, and especially stroke, than those with normal blood pressure.

You can, of course, control how much salt you consume and limit it. See some tips…

- Learn to use spices and aromatic herbs (eg dill, oregano, rosemary) to enhance the taste of food.

- When shopping, do not forget to read the packaging labels of the food you choose.

- Be careful in choosing ready-made sauces and "instant" products that may be high in sodium.

- Rinse canned foods stored in brine before eating.

- Chop the olives and feta that are traditionally used in the Greek village salad.

- When cooking pasta / rice, do not add salt to the water.
